As it does every year, the ONISR(Observatoire national interministériel de la sécurité routière) has published its report on accidents involving all means of locomotion. The toll is heavy for soft mobility, with an increase in bicycle fatalities. Bicycle accidents are also on the increase. And it is outside built-up areas that bicycle accidents are increasing considerably.
More and more cyclists killed on the roads
244 - the number of people killed on bicycles in France in 2022. A sad report from the ONISR. Unlike the car, where fatalities are falling, cycling fatalities continue to rise sharply! 30% increase in the number of cyclists killed in 2022.
More bicycle accident victims outside built-up areas
Contrary to popular belief, cyclists in large conurbations are not the most exposed to real danger. In Paris, for example, there are 1 cycling fatalities. Cyclists are much more at risk outside built-up areas & in the countryside. There are several explanations for these accidents: a lack of infrastructure dedicated to cycling, smaller roads where regulations are less respected due to a lack of controls...
More and more accidents and injuries on bicycles.
Accidents involving bicycles also continue to rise.ONSIR sees two reasons for this: the first is simply the increase in the number of users, the second is multiple. Among the reasons for the increase in cycling accidents are the failure to obey traffic signs, a lack of training & awareness among all users of all types of use, a lack of infrastructure and a lack of protective equipment: helmets, for example, are still not compulsory for cycling in France, but are strongly recommended. (What equipment is compulsory when cycling?)
Scooter accidents on the rise.
