Did you know that one of the main obstacles to cycling is the risk of theft and accidents? These are the findings of surveys carried out by the Federation of Bicycle Users, otherwise known as FUB. For safe outings on your bike, whether you're a novice or an experienced rider, a little reminder never hurts. Discover our 10 tips for 100% safe cycling!
No.1: A healthy bike: the basics
Before you set off, make sure your bike is well maintained and ready for use: check tire inflation, the condition of the brakes and the steering. This is the basis for avoiding the slightest problem. A trip to the workshop once a year is also highly recommended, especially for daily use.
No.2: Equipment
To limit the risks & protect yourself, remember to wear the right equipment. Still too few users think about wearing a helmet. Sometimes considered cumbersome or unattractive, they nevertheless protect you in the event of a fall and limit the severity of accidents. Keep an eye on the weather too, and we recommend that you always carry a pair of gloves and rain gear to cope with inclement weather. Last but not least, never leave home without a puncture-proof kit, a cloth to clean your hands & a few tools. A puncture or derailment are the daily lot of any good bike tourer or cyclist!
No. 3: Be visible
Compulsory equipment on the bike: lights, front & rear lights for the bike, reflectors, reflective strips, vests (outside urban areas) must absolutely be present & worn, otherwise fines of up to 38 euros may be imposed.(See road safety and government regulations) To go one step further, it's important to be visible yourself: wear light-colored clothing, and reflective technical clothing, day and night.
No.4: Listen
Danger often knows how to make itself heard, so keep your ears open, avoid wearing headphones, and especially avoid using the telephone.
No.5: Be heard
Did you know? A bell is compulsory on your bike, and it's a real ally when it comes to signalling.
No.6: Prepare your itinerary
Check traffic conditions and the condition of the road, path or trail you're about to take! Protecting yourself on your bike also means checking where you're riding!
No. 7: Respect the signs
This may seem like basic advice, but it's rarely heeded! When cycling, use roads that are suitable for bicycles, such as cycle paths and signposted footpaths. Respect signs and traffic lights, and go even further by anticipating as far as possible any infringements that others might commit, such as failing to give way or running a red light! Respecting the Highway Code on your bike means a safe and secure ride!
No.8: Plan for the unexpected...
Unfortunately, it happens! Always have something to keep you hydrated and something to eat. This tip could be the first bicycle safety tip for the most sporty among you! Protect your bike as much as possible from theft by being equipped with a "real" anti-theft device and a marked bike (bicycode). (see our article: 4 tips to protect your bike from theft) A anti-theft GPS tracker like the Hoot Bike trackers, will enable you to monitor, track and find your bike should the worst happen (please note that the tracker must be charged 🙂 ).
N°9: Be reachable or geolocatable.
Don't forget to take a charged phone with you, so you can call or call if you need help. Alternatively, opt for a GPS bike tracker with sim card, like the HOOT 800, which lets you send a text message with your instant position if you need to!
N°10: STAY IN SHAPE!
Don't forget that cycling is always a physical and mental effort. Increased vigilance, energy expenditure - cycling demands a lot from your body, so don't ask too much of it just yet, and make sure you're always in good shape so that you can cycle with peace of mind!
